What They Are

Fossils are the buried remains of animals and plants that lived in the past. These can date back to as long ago as 570 Million years when the first simple life is thought to have appeared on Earth, over 4000 Million years after its formation. The development of Earth from then up to the present day has been divided into geological periods illustrated in the chart below.
